L&R Roadlines partnered with Carillion Kier Joint Venture (CKJV) at The Big Bang North West 2017 event which took place in Liverpool on 4th July. Organised by MerseySTEM, the event is a STEM celebration which enables young people to meet face-to face with inspiring engineers and scientists, from all walks of industry and academia, and discover information about careers, employers and further study in the local area via fun ‘quick hitting’ hands-on action.
The ‘Construction Corner’ attracted over 600 visitors interested in finding out more about the road marking industry. There was particular interest in seeing demonstrations of how the latest HiFlex Preformed thermoplastic markings are quick to apply with a torch or burner. Thermoplastic emoji’s were used for the demonstrations and handed out to visitors along with goodie bags containing career leaflets, stationery items and sweets. During the event, over 400 emoji’s and 600 goodie bags were handed out.
Visitors were also keen to find out more about the science behind the materials used by the road marking industry. L&R Roadlines showed how the raw materials, including resin that comes from renewable tree sap, are used with additives and thousands of glass beads to preformed markings that reflect light and offer the skid resistance to improve road safety both day and night. The company also showed how the product is applied to road surfaces.
According to Lisa Shakeshaft, STEM Ambassador at L&R Roadlines: “The event enabled us to engage with many young people and show them the many exciting career opportunities available in the construction industry. We hope that this awakens interest in in science, technology, engineering and maths by illustrating how it’s translated into real life and the ways in which learning can be applied to the world of work. It has been a pleasure to support and promote STEM and we are already planning our attendance at next year’s event.
L&R Roadlines also received many requests from schools and colleges for Lisa Shakeshaft, as a STEM Ambassador, to present engineering workshops and give presentations about regarding construction career options.
