Since late 2016, Cardiff Council, Welsh Water and Natural Resources Wales, supported by the Landfill Communities Fund, have invested £2 million in Greener Grangetown, an innovative scheme to help make Grangetown a greener, cleaner place to live.  As part of the initiative, Wales’ first bicycle street was created.  However, the street needed one more finishing touch – the central ‘rumble strip’.  Up against time and cost constraints, the central rumble strip was installed by L&R Roadlines using the innovative HitexPrint imprinted surfacing system.

Commenting on the project, Ian Titherington from Cardiff Council said, “Greener Grangetown is the first project of its kind in the UK where so many multi-benefits have been delivered for an inner-city community from a SuDS retrofit scheme. The 12 streets incorporated have been transformed with green infrastructure and significantly enhanced cycling and pedestrian access.”  The project involved many different contacting aspects from drainage to construction and L&R Roadlines were able to contribute, Ian continued, “We faced project challenges due to the time to complete the granite surfacing.  L&R Roadlines offered and delivered a swift and suitable engineered alternative. I would be very happy to recommend using L&R to other clients, including our own Highways Department.  L&R are a professional outfit that delivered the specification and quality required on this award-winning project, all within the tight timescales we needed to meet.”

The solution used for the central rumble strip was HitexPrint a coloured, imprint-able thermoplastic surfacing.  The decorative, tactile surface of the imprinted surfacing is designed to mimic the appearance of traditional brick setts, block paving, cobbles and flags.  The impervious surface means that it is totally maintenance free, with anti-skid properties for enhanced safety of both pedestrians, cyclists and traffic.  The durable, embossed material was perfect to provide not only to provide a nice-looking aesthetic appearance but also give a ‘rumble’ if a bike or car were to pass over it.  HitexPrint is a hot applied thermoplastic wearing course that needs minimal surface preparation time and is very quick to install meaning disruption is minimal in comparison to more traditional methods.
